Business Planning - a thought
Business plan,
strategic plan wherefore art thou plans ?
Many people perceive a
business plan as something you do prior to starting a business,
but business plans can be an effective way to review progress
and plan on a rolling basis.
Business planning does not
mean that everything can be pre-planned and made to
work simply by watching the clock - you need to make sure you
have your ingredients (your business data, data on your sector,
where you would like to be in, say 3 years, staffing, money,
the wider economy etc) before you even begin.
Reviewing what you have achieved, how it was
all done and then planning what you will need to do during your
continuing journey really is quite exciting.
You will speak to your business partners, staff,
accountant, suppliers, maybe even some of your competitors and from all the
inputs you receive, you will start to think about what was good,
what was bad, what you would repeat, what sounds good and is
worth a shot, how you should be complying with more regulations
and so on.
Even when you have
compiled and completed a formal plan as time progresses the plan
may well need to be adapted and revised - review your
plan regularly - so that you can be flexible and adapt
to internal and external influences on your business.
The web is full of advice on business plans,
how to make a good one, the people that can do it for you,
implement it and make you millions !! However, not as many of
the sites remind you that you have a business to run at the same
time - so how can you do this and still be guided by your plan ?
Well, if you have read this far then perhaps
at least you have thought about the future of your business and
that really is the first step to planning.
So you see, business
planning is not as bad or as hard as it may first appear!
